I Quilt Scarlet and Gray

Harvest Cabins has gone to it's new home.

When my sister Dawn was here last year she picked this Harvest Cabins quilt out.

I told her I would get it quilted and send it back to Florida with my Dad last Fall. It did get quilted by Jennifer McCann, but I had not completed the binding.

Doesn't Nermal look great with this as a background?

So when she decided to visit this month to spend time with my Mom Cindy after her breast cancer surgery, I decided to get it bound so she could take it back with her.

She helped me pick out the fabric binding, it's a diagonal strip from Moda from the Gobble Gobble line by Sandy Gervais.

I like the way that a diagonal binding finishes off a quilt.

This was the first quilt on my 2012 UFO list, and the 4th item I have finished off the list so far!!

2012 Lake Metro Farmpark Quilt Show

Last night was the reception for the exhibitors and their guests at the 2012 Lake Metro Farmpark Quilt Show. I invited my Mom Cindy, my Aunt Winnie and my sister Dawn is here from Florida. It was great chance for them to enjoy something that is one of my great passions.

As soon as we walked in we spotted the Best of Show and Large General Pieced first place quilt, Amazon Star by Sue Wilson of Huron, Ohio. This quilt was selected from the first place winners of all the categories

What an awesome quilt!! This is a Judy Niemeyer pattern. I have always loved Lone Star quilts and this may become a future project. If I learn how to paper piece effectively.

Then we headed down the hallway heading for the reception.

In the hallway we found Jennifer McCann's entry Key Largo.

This wallhanging won a 3rd place in the Pictorial category.

After enjoying the wonderful food provided by J & J Catering of Kirtland, Ohio we went in search of my quilt!

I found Rebecca Silbaugh's award winning quilt Union Jack in the side room.

I have this pattern and will use it to make myself a scrap quilt.

I finally found my quilt Spinning Sampler just as you enter the room that holds the featured artists quilts, what an honor!

It's so cool seeing it hanging there with it's Red ribbon!!

I had Dawn take a picture of me with my quilt.

I hope everyone that attends the 2012 show has a great time experiencing all of this beautiful art!

Our 8 hour trip to New York!!

No not New York City, we spent the night in Fishkill New York, which is 60 minutes north of Manhatten. DH was on a 'wishlist' speaker retrieval trip and I just happened to find a couple quilt shops to stop at on the way!

The first was Enchanted Mountain Quilting in Olean, New York. It's 2.5 hours from our house and perfect place to stop for cookies and a restroom break. While I checked out the fabrics my husband spoke with Betsy about their common home town of Castalia Ohio? What a small world!!

First I found this beautiful Serentity Gray by Red Rooster Fabrics.

Then I spotted this Beautiful Red Complements Embelishments by South Sea Imports.

The last thing I saw, was these Primitive Muslins by Moda, they looked like suede!

Then we got back in the van and continued on to Endicott for lunch then finally to Fishkill.

We checked into our Days Inn and then decided to go to the other quilt shop on my list.

The Quilt Basket in Wappingers Falls, New York

This shop has a great selection of fabrics, patterns and notions. It was a little hard for me to make a selection with my DH following me around! They had a number of totes displayed in the shop so I took the opportunity to purchase some Red 1" Webbing to use as straps on one of my next tote bags. I also purchased the Large Twister tool. I really had fun using the Lil' Twister to make this Christmas wreath wall hanging.

Yesterday we drove straight home so the van could be returned.

Today it's back to the sewing machine and a spring project to try and push away the snow and cold!!

Another 2012 UFO completed!!

I have completed another Unfinished Object that was on my list for 2012.

My two Bargello Color Wheel wall hangings. I made these using a pattern called Bargello Color Wheel by Cheryl Phillips. It included an acrylic 10 degree template that is used to cut the wedged pieces from the strip sets.

Nermal thought they were fine without borders and a center circle.

Now I need to decide if I will quilt them or have Jennifer quilt them.

Last week when we dropped off our quilts at the Lake Farmpark show in Kirtland, we did lunch and then stopped at a couple of quilt shops.

I decided that I needed this pattern by Betz White.

I still had some of this great fabric that I bought at Joann's.

The directions were easy to following and had a lot of great diagrams.

It's a much smaller purse then I have been carrying, so I think I will have to eliminate some of the stuff I carry!!

My Spinning Sampler quilt received a Red Ribbon!!!

One of the items on my 'Bucket List' was to win a ribbon at a Quilt Show.

I'm so excited that I can cross that off of my list!!

I found out today that my Spinning Sampler quilt received a 2nd Place Ribbon in the

General Pieced, Mid size category of the 2012 Lake Farmparks Quilt show! The General category is for those quilters that pieced their quilt and then someone else quilted it.

If I was to give an acceptance speak I would have to thank the following people:

My Dear Husband Jim for putting up with quilting projects all over the house.

My friend and longarm quilter Jennifer McCann for her great quilting and support.

My friend and fellow quilter Leita Shahan for suggesting that I enter this quilt and coming up with the great name.

Marti Michell for teaching the class I took in 2010 and providing a tool that helped me to improve my piecing.

Gayle Norman instructor of Cottonpickers Quilt Shop Marti and Me Club, for her encouragement.

God for giving me the time and talent to improve my piecing.

Below is the story I submitted with my quilt.

Starting at the top the 12 blocks used in the quilt are Rising Star, Weathervane, Northern Lights, Rosette, Pieced Star, Hidden Star, Rolling Sawtooth Star, Ohio Star, Dutchman’s Pinwheel, Sweet Sixteen, Martha Washington Star, Wild Goose.

I used a layout I found in Electric Quilt’s EQ7 and then added a border that includes 200 Flying Geese. I’m not sure what really possessed me to make that many Flying Geese??

Jennifer McCann’s quilting really adds to the final overall presentation of this quilt.

So I have a question. can I now say that I'm an award winning quilter??

Entwined Hearts

I completed the top for a wall hanging last night.

Trish Allthingscrafty from the Quilters with Modern Tools Facebook page had share a picture of the Valentine Wall hanging that she was working on. Hers was more pink and reminded me of the Breast Cancer Ribbon.

I shared with the group that I needed to make on of these for my mom who was scheduled to have a masectomy this past Thursday. Mom's surgery was successful and now she is home resting and waiting for the results of the lymph node testing. This wall hanging represents for me, my love for my mom and all the prayers that were said and are continuing to be said for her recovery.

I searched my stash and couldn't really find any pink. So I selected a couple of reds instead.

Big surprise that I would have red in my stash!! Then I added some white Fairy Frost.

I had been wanting to attempt a Storm at Sea quilt so this wall hanging gave me the opportunity. I used Trish's picture to help me recreate the wall hanging in EQ7, then used my Marti Michell Perfect Piecing templates Set C to cut out the fabric. It went together very quickly, now I have to get it quilted.

Let It Snow Quilt Top is ready for quilting!!

The snow finally did stop on Saturday!! We had an additional 3" when we left for church Sunday morning. It sure was cold!! My blood hasn't thicken up enough for 20 degree days!

I was able to finish my Let It Snow top yeasterday!!

The top is 78" x 78" which makes it a challenge to select backing material.

I have a piece of 72" x 60" really soft beautiful blue material that I would love to use for the back. I would have to add a 10" border to if for it to fit. If I can find something in my stash, I think that is how I will piece the back.

This quilt is a great color for our living room and Nermal likes too!

The sun is shining, the snow is melting and we are suppose to get some rain tomorrow.

The nice thing about Northeastern Ohio is that the weather is always changing!

Oh the weather outside is frightful, but inside it's so delightful!!!

8 inches in Northeastern Ohio and more falling!!

It may be beautiful, but it is keeping me from traveling to see friends!!

So instead I will be quilting!!!

The perfect top to complete today is my Moda Let It Snow batiks.

I have to cut and attach a border.

I have completed the binding on my Spinning Sampler in preparation for entering it in the

I used a layout I found in Electric Quilt’s EQ7 and then added a border that includes 200 Flying Geese. I’m not sure what really possessed me to make that many Flying Geese??

Sandy's Tote with Zippered Extension

My friend Sandy retired on Friday. She loves to Sail and also enjoys Hot Air Balloons. so I made her a tote.

I used my Marti Michell templates to make the Sail Boat.

The Hot Air Balloon is a panel left from previous project.

I used Insul Brite so that it can be used to keep her wine and cheese chilled when she sails.

This is the first tote I have made with a Zipper Extension. I found the tutorial at Mary Grace's blog http://www.hookedonneedles.com/2009/01/tote-bag-tutorial-lesson-6-zippered.html

I also like the way she added the pockets to the lining.

Last 2011 Christmas Present - Ohio University Tote

New Year's Eve weekend we celebrated Christmas with my DH's family!

This year we decided to select names from the adults, I swaped for my sister-in-law Heather.

Heather is an Ohio University graduate and I had a couple OU machine applique kits that I decided to make into a tote bag. She is also a wonderful singer so I used some musical fabric as an accent.

In addition I made a cover for her e-reader, unfortunately it is too small !! I suggested she use this one for a note pad and I will make a larger one this winter.

I completed my Marti Michell Scarlet and Gray sampler in time for it to be listed as completed on my 2011 UFO (unfinished objects).

It has been renamed Spinning Sampler and will be entered in the 2012 Lake Farm Park Quilt Show at the end of February 10th - March 21st in Kirtland, Ohio.

I took a class from Marti Michell using her Perfect Patchwork Templates at the 2010 Lake Farm Park’s Quilt Show. She displayed a number of samplers in class in 12” and 6” sizes. So I started one using my Scarlet and Gray stash that includes twelve 12" blocks on point, with a 24" Carpenter’s Wheel center medallion block. The 12 blocks used in the quilt are Rising Star, Unknown, Northern Lights, Rosette, Pieced Star, Hidden Star, Lazy Afternoon, Ohio Star, Dutchman’s Pinwheel, Sweet Sixteen, Martha Washington Star, Wild Goose.

I used a layout I found in Electric Quilt’s EQ7 and then added a border that includes 200 Flying Geese. I’m not sure what really possessed me to make that many Flying Geese?? I guess it was how good the quilt looked in EQ7!

It was great working with Free Motion Long-arm Quilter Jennifer McCann of Galena Ohio, she helped me decide on the thread color and the all over quilting design. Her quilting really adds to the final overall presentation of the quilt.

1. Dawn's Fall Quilt

This quilt needs the binding completed.

Binding completed 02/13/12 this quilt is now in Florida.

2. Balloon Race

This quilt needs the binding attached and a hanging sleeve. I have determined that I like to use a 2" strip of fabric for my bindings. I perfer the look of hand sewn bindings which can take awhile depending on the size of the quilt.

This one also needs binding.

4. Blooming Nine Patch

This one also needs binding. Are you beginning to see a pattern here?

5. Bargello Color Wheel

I started this in the fall of 2010 and you can see that Nermal insisted on helping!

I decided to make 2 wallhangings. The wedges are all sewn toghether and a facing has been added to make them square. I still need to add a couple borders and the center circle.

As you can see Nermal is still helping me!!

6. Bargello Black and Gold Allover Jacket

It took a year or so to collect all the fabric for this jacket. I have cut the strips and sewn them together. Now they need cut in the vary widths required for Bargello.

This still hasn't been cut apart.

I recently found the pattern so I need to work on this over the winter!!!

7. Starring the Buckeyes

I'm not sure the actual name of this quilt. I think it was donated to the Kids n Kamp Celebrity Quilt Auction at the Shoe in 2008. I fell in love with the pattern and decided to make one of my own. Each block is 8" and I'm using Marti Michell's acrylic templates. I have a large stash of Scarlet and Gray fabric. This quilt uses a number of Moda Marbles and Robert Kaufman Fusions. I have a few of the blocks done.

I have completed a few more of the blocks.

8. Marti Michell Sampler

It was more difficult then I would have thought to manipulate this 80" x 80" quilt to attach the binding by machine. Hand sewing the binding to the back of the quilt was actually easy in comparison.

9. Christmas Tree Card Holder

I was able to have this hanging on the door for Christmas, but it still needs the binding completed.

10. Checkerboard Squares

This is a pattern I’m testing for The Quilt Pattern Magazine. The top needs finished and then I may quilt it myself.

11. Kim’s Wedding Quilt

This quilt needs designed, pieced, quilted and bound by September of 2012.

I think it will be a sampler using Marti Michell Perfect Patchwork templates.

I wanted to wish everyone a Merry Christmas!

My additional church activities have really helped me to understand and appreciate Advent and Christmas this year!

I have one last project to show you all before it's time to finish cleaning and start prepping for the Christmas dinner tomorrow!!

I found this Christmas Tree card holder tutorial at Marija's Fabric of My Life blog. She shared a number of great holiday projects and gifts. I wanted it wider for more cards so I added some additional 3D Flying Geese. The Flying Geese technique is from Ricky Tim's website.

I hope everyone makes a point of enjoying your time with your family and friends and remember Christ is the reason for this wonderful Season!!

1. Simple Star which uses Moda Birchwood Lane flannel

This needs a mitered border added.

I looked at this one, but it didn't get any farther then that!

2. Alaska Photo Album quilt

I bought this kit when DH and I traveled to Alaska for our 20th Anniversary the summer of 2008. I have started cutting out the 'photo's.

The top is finished and in line to be quilted!!

This one was completed and entered in the 2011 Lake Farm Parks Quilt Show in February!

This is the first UFO selected to work on in 2011. Which is great because I can finish it and enter it in the Lake Farm Parks Quilt Show on January 19th. It is a wall quilt at 42" x 62". I found the backing to make the hanging sleeve and the binding fabric.

Hanging Sleeve is attached and needs hand sewn down.

Binding on a diagonal has been cut, sewn together and pressed.

7. Sunshine and Shadow/Trip Around the World

This is one of the first quilts I did back in the early 90's. I had it machine quilted last year. I don't really like it very much. It needs a binding, so I may try doing the binding my machine. It has a flannel back so it will need a wider binding probably 2.25" or 2.5".

Nook Tablet and Handmade Cover

My DH very generously presented me with a Barnes and Noble Nook Tablet for Christmas.

I found a pattern by Birdiful Stitches on etsy for a Padded e-Reader Cover.

Of course I used my favorite colors Scarlet and Gray!!!

It went together pretty easily a few hours.

It has 3 pockets inside.

My blog and Garfield look pretty good on the Nook Tablet!

Christmas is a Cakewalk and Vote!

I have enterd my Cakewalk quilt in the Quilting Gallery's Christmas Quilts contest. You have the weekend to vote for up to 7 of your favorite quilts!

This is a pattern I tested for Barbara Chojnacki of Six Gables Designs back in the spring. The majority of the fabric is Robert Kaufman Holiday Flourish 3 by Peggy Toole. It's beautiful holiday fabric with gold embossing to give it a very rich look!!

I used EQ7 to help me to decide the fabric choices.

And Garfield tested it for softness!!

Christmas Tablerunners and Vote

I have entered a tablerunner in the Quilting Gallery's Christmas table runners contest you still have a couple hours to vote for your favorite.

In June of 2010 I started volunteering as a pattern tester. It gives me an opportunity to perfect my skills and create items from patterns that I might not have purchased.

This is the first pattern I tested, it was a tablerunner called Every Day's A Holiday An Artful Table Runner. She sent me the fabric, Benartex Noel, pattern and a return envelope. I tested this pattern for Sarah Whitney at Quilt Patterns from Sweet Clover Canyon. I used e-mail to communicate with her and send her comments on the pattern. Upon completion I sent her the table runner and a picture. She used my name in the pattern as one of her testers.

New Appetizer Recipe - Frank's RedHot Buffalo Chicken Dip

In preparation for a few Christmas parties I'm trying out a new appetizer recipe - Frank's RedHot Buffalo Chicken Dip. My niece Paulina has made this for some of our family gatherings in the past. I have recently become addicted to the Subway Buffalo Chicken sub, so I thought this would be a great recipe to try out.

It sure looks yummy!

Servings: 4 cups dip

Prep Time: 5

Cook Time: 20

INGREDIENTS:

8 oz. pkg. cream cheese, softened

1/2 cup blue cheese or ranch salad dressing

1/2 cup FRANK'S® REDHOT® Original Cayenne Pepper Sauce or FRANK'S® REDHOT® Buffalo Wing Sauce

1/2 cup crumbled blue cheese or shredded mozzarella cheese

2 cans (12.5 oz. each) White Premium Chunk Chicken Breast in Water, drained

DIRECTIONS:

HEAT oven to 350°F. Place cream cheese into deep baking dish. Stir until smooth.

MIX in salad dressing, Frank's RedHot Sauce and cheese. Stir in chicken.

BAKE 20 min. or until mixture is heated through; stir. Garnish as desired. Serve with crackers or vegetables.

TIPS:

Reduced Calorie Recipe: Substitute neufchatel cheese for the cream cheese, and low fat options for the salad dressing and blue cheese.

Microwave Directions: Prepare as above. Place in microwave-safe dish. Microwave, uncovered, on HIGH 5 min. until hot, stirring halfway through cooking.

Slow Cooker Method: Combine ingredients as directed above. Place mixture into small slow cooker. Cover pot. Heat on HIGH setting for 1 1/2 hours until hot and bubbly or on LOW setting for 2 1/2 to 3 hours. Stir.

Tailgating Tip: Prepare dip ahead and place in heavy disposable foil pan. Place pan on grill and heat dip until hot and bubbly.

Tip: You may substitute 2 cups shredded cooked chicken.

2011 Christmas Quilt Show entry

I have decided to enter my Cakewalk quilt into SewCalGal's Annual Christmas Quilt Show.

I used EQ7 to help me to decided the fabric choices.

The pattern is made of 2 blocks that are rotated to get the desired look.

I have entered a Christmas Apron I made in the Quilting Gallery's current contest.

I was asked to test the Christmas Kitchen pattern in July of 2010 by the designer Ruth Blanchet. When looking through my stash of fabric I discovered the Folded Star block and the coordinating fabric.

I decided this was an opportunity to create something and reduce my stash at the same time. The mice and reindeer add a whimsical quality to the apron while using what I consider the colors of Christmas, red, green and white.

The bib has been quilted diagonally and then the Folder Star was attached using a satin stitch on the sewing machine. The red and white bias trim and straps tie the bib and skirt pieces together and make me think of Candy Canes. The neck strap can be adjusted for length; waist can be tied in a bow in the back or brought to the front to add an accent.

I donated it to the Western Reserve Junior Service League.

I love Thanksgiving!

It's a great time to see family and eat Turkey, Stuffing, Mash Potatoes and a little Wine! What is even better is when you are visiting someone else and you don't have to cook!! This year we will be visiting Jim's brother John and he is a great cook! Don't worry I get my chance to cook on Christmas Day, more Turkey, Stuffing, and Mash Potatoes. Oh yes and more Wine!!

Since I love Turkey so much I decided I needed a Turkey Wallhanging to welcome friends and family.

I designed this wall hanging using EQ7 and a Quiltmaker quilting stencil. I hand embroidered the center and then added the Marti and Me Club Twinkling Stars to the borders. It is 36" x 36" and just fits on the back of my front door! It brightens up the hallway. My next project is a smaller turkey wall hanging.

This is the third time I have entered Amy's Creative Side Bloggers Quilt Festival.

I have decided to share with you one of my many Scarlet and Gray quilts. I was recently honored to be asked to participate in a Scarlet and Gray Quilt Trunk Show.

Joyce Ely of JEllen's House of Fabric and an Ohio State alumni, asked me to share my quilts with her customers.

Of all the quilts displayed in the trunk show, my favorite quilt is Scarlet and Gray Allover.

Scarlet and Gray Allover 48" x 48" is a Marti Michell pattern I saw displayed in The Glass Thimble in Columbus. It is made using Marti's Log Cabin Ruler and her Perfect Piecing acrylic templates. I machine pieced it in 2009 and had it machine quilted by Jennifer McCann of Galena, Ohio in 2010. I had the pleasure of meeting and taking a class from Marti at Lake Farm Parks the winter of 2010, it was awesome!!

I learned alot about using Marti's rulers while making this quilt. Since I have a large stash of Scarlet and Gray, I see myself making another one of these quilts now that I have even more experience using Marti's templates.

Scarlet and Gray Trunk Show

I spent this past Sunday afternoon with Joyce Ely from Jellen's House of Fabric in Lyndhurst, Ohio. When I met Joyce last year we discovered that we were both Buckeyes! Which means that we graduated from The Ohio State University and we Bleed Scarlet and Gray!!!

She had asked me if I would be willing to share with her customer's some of my Scarlet and Gray quilts. I said sure, it would force me to get them quilted and bound by the beginning of October. I was able to deliver 6 quilts, 3 wallhangings and 2 tote bags. With the help of my quilter Jennifer McCann and my friend Leita Shahan who helped me complete the bindings.

Joyce and her assistants did a great job setting up the displays and hanging the quilts.

She has some great scarlet and gray fabric if you want to make your own quilt.

If you stop to visit Joyce you need to check out the Script Ohio quilt that Mary Coffey made!

The quilts will be on display until October 15th.

Halloween Kittens

A couple of weeks ago I found this Halloween Kittens fabric at Keepsake Quilting from Hoffman Fabrics.

I have never been a big Halloween fan, but this fabric just was so cute!!

I sent a picture to my Mom and see decided she wanted a couple pillows for her 70th Birthday.

Nermal is helping me press Grandma's pillow top!!

There faces and customes are just so cute!!! Nermal and Garfield sure have a little devil inside of them!

And check out this little witch!!

If you look close you can see the spiderweb motif I designed for the machine quilting.

Nermal decided to cozy up with these cute kitties!

The pillows are 14" and I think the orange and brown work well with the fabric.

A flying is geese is a unit that is twice as long as it is wide and is made up of 3 triangles.

This block is made up of 2 Flying Geese units, and was used in piecing the border.

Flying Geese are also used to create Variable Stars.

The center block of my quilt is made up of 3 different sizes of Flying Geese.

I have entered a Blooming Nine Patch at Quilting Gallery's themed quilt contest.

I say my first Blooming Nine Patch at a local quilt show and decided to make one using directions I found on the internet.

Using my 1990's stash caused me to run out of fabric and I had to redo some of the blocks to complete the quilt. Now I have to figure out what fabric to use for the binding.

My sister Dawn has placed her name on this quilt.

And I guess Garfield has also!!

My 100th I Quilt Scarlet and Gray Blog Post!!!

When I started this blog just over a year ago, I thought it would be a great way to share my love of The Ohio State Buckeyes and Quilting. But it has been so much more!! Now writing my 100th post I think back to my first post, about the first Scarlet and Gray quilt that I made and the many that have followed.

The blogging friends I have made across the USA, Darlene at Insights from SewCalGal and the World, Blockhead from Tasmania Australia.

The abilty to share my blog posts on Facebook has allowed me to share with even more friends and family.

You have read about my DH Jim and the boys Garfield and Nermal. Even as I write this Nermal is being very helpful. Not!!

I appreciate everyone that has voted for one my quilts at the Quilting Gallery contests, one of these days I may actually place!!

I have shared with you the many quitling patterns I have tested by some really great designers! They amaze me with their talents.

I will continue to post new quilts and projects, and other things going on with myself and my family.

I hope you continue to read my next 100 blog posts.

Remembering 9/11/2001: Have we started to Forgive?

When I think back, I remember my shock, despair and fear for the USA. 10 years later I pray for those that lost their lives, those that lost family and friends and those that have not been able fo find forgiveness. Today's mass was all about forgiveness.

In our bulletin the following was printed. It was submitted by Bud Ozar.

"Unable to forgive another, means we are holding onto a past wrong and hoping for a better past. That is not going to happen. We must move on with our life by accepting we were unjustly treated and it will not be corrected. We aren't condoing the injustice. We just don't let it control our lives any longer. Forgiveness is critical to living a healthy life in the present."

I hope I have taken steps to forgive those that planned and executed the attacks on America.

He's BACK!!! My Jim Thome is back with the Cleveland Indians!!!

Ok, so he's not really my Jim Thome. But he is the reason I started watching baseball back in the 90's. Let's face it being from northeastern Ohio we haven't had much luck with our professional sports teams!! So when Jim started hitting home runs everyone got excited!!! Plus he was really easy on the eyes at First Base!!! I was pretty upset when he left us for Philladelphia!!! But it did enable me to buy a Jim Thome jersey for $5.

My friend Wendy called on Friday to ask if I wanted to go to a game this weekend to welcome Jim back to Cleveland? I said YES!!! And my DH Jim even said he would join us. HMMM Jim and Jim?? We decided to go to the Sunday game.

It was Kid's day, so they had a kids lineup and the kids got to run out on the field. That was cute and I'm sure the kids got a kick out it!

It was a little cloudy and it even rained on us a little bit.

Wendy got us great seats.

We knew driving in that Jim wasn't in the lineup, and that he wouldn't pinch hit unless the Royal's brought in a right handed pitcher. The game was pretty boring, the Indian's weren't hitting and the score was Royals 2 - Indians 1 when it happend!!! The Royals called for a relief pitcher and he was right handed!!

So how long would I have to wait? How long would the family that flashed a sign saying 'Evacuated Virginia and Irene to see Jim Thome!!' have to wait?

Well it turned out not very long!! There he was right below us!! My Jim Thome!!!

We realized that this would be his only time at bat and we hoped he would get on base or hit a home run!!! Our hopes were dashed when he struck out!! But we still got see him bat and the crowd went wild!!! Unfortunately the Indians lost the game. But we still had fun!!!

Little Glam Bags make great gifts!!!

This past week I participated in the Travel Handmade series, sponsored by The Sewing Summit, of blog entries that focused on making totes, bags and accessories from tutorials and patterns.

Last fall I kept busy by making a number of Little Glam Bags by Pink Sands Beach Design. Being unemployed I had to make gifts for my girlfriends and nieces.

These bags are great for using up those fat quarters you have been collecting. I bought the zippers on sale!!

I completed 10 of these bags quickly!!!

Garfield liked my bags also!

I used the concepts I learned using this pattern and made a larger bag for my sister.

I'm in the process of binding a number of my scarlet and gray quilts. I have been using a 2" wide double fold binding. I added a binding on to the quilt below.

I didn't have quite enough so I cut two more 2" wide strips. When I went to attach them I realized that the majority of the binding had been cut 2.25" wide?

I have made the decision that I need to remove the majority of the binding and trim it down to 2" then reattach it. At least I figured this out before starting the handing sewing!!! Why is this so important you might ask? I just like the way that a 2" wide binding wraps around the quilt.

2011 Pets on Quilt Show August 15th - August 19th

I want to thank Darlene for organizing this great virtual quilt show. You can check out all the entries at Welcome to 2011 Pets on Quilts Show. In the last year I have been very busy testing quilt patterns. My boys Garfield and Nermal have been very helpful.

It has been a tough year for both of the boys. First we had Garfield shaved!!

Nermal helps me blog and design quilts using EQ7!!

And he helps me sew???

Now Nermal is having some medical issues!! He was recently bit in the tail area and has been to the vet twice. We just hope this round of antibiotics takes care of the infection.

Block "O" Pillow tutorial

This is my first tutorial so kind suggestions are appreciated!!

Twenty years or so ago I purchased floor pillows for Christmas gifts from AshCrafts. They were different colors and had names monogramed on them. I decided it was time to recover my pillow and make a Block O Pillow.

First I measured it 27" by 31.5" and then took those measurements to EQ7 to design the pillow. I decided to use 5" squares that would finish at 4.5". With a finished 4.5" border.

Fabric yardage:
3/4 yard of Gray
3/8 yard of Red
1 yard of batting
1 yard of muslin
1 yard of material for the pillow backing, I used fleece

Cutting Instructions:
Start by cutting 4 gray - 5" strips the width of fabric (WOF) these will be used for the borders.
From each strip cut 2 - 5" squares (a total of 8), the remaining strips will be used for the borders.

Then cut 2 red - 5" strips the width of fabric (WOF), cut 12 - 5" squares from the 2 strips.

Half Square Triangles(HST):
Take 2 Gray squares and 2 Red squares and cut them diagonally.

Using a 1/4" seam sew one Gray triangle to one Red triangle right sides together. You will need a total of 4 HST's. With these triangles be cut on a diagonal you have to be careful not to pull them out of shape as you are sewing.

When sewing a project I chain piece as much as possible. This saves time and thread.

After the 4 HST's are done I start sewing the 5" Squares together.

Squares:

Sew 2 Red squares together right sides together. Do this twice for the top and bottom of the "O".

Then I sew the remaining Red squares to the Gray squares right sides together.

You will have 6 sets of Red and Gray.

Clip the pieces apart carefully.

Trim the HST's down to 4.5" using a ruler with a 45 degree diagonal. Place the diagonal line on the sewn seam and carefully trim all 4 edges.

Finished after trimming.

Press the seams of the HST's to the red fabric.

Attach one of the HST's to the Red square set matching the red fabrics.

You will do this twice for the top and bottom of the "O"

Then attach the final HST's to these two 3 piece sets matching the red fabrics.

Now sew 2 of the Red and Gray square sets together matching the gray fabrics.

You will have 3 of these 4 piece sets when you are done.

You should now have 5 sets of fabric.

Placement of these sets is very important.

Set 1 will be sewn to Set 2, Set 3 will be sewn to Set 4 and then Set 5 will be sewn to Set 4.

I didn't have you press the seams on the sets, so that you can alternate the direction of the seams to help ensure the seams interlock.

I place a pin at the left corner, ensuring edges match, then move my way right adding pins as necessary to make sure seams and edges match.

As I feed the Set 1 and Set 2 through the sewing machine I remove pins just before my needle reaches them.

I use my stiletto to ensure that the seam on the bottom continues to lay flat.

Follow the same process for sewing together Set 3 and Set 4.

Then attach Set 5 to Set 4.

Then attach Set 2 to Set 3

You will now have a completed Block "0"

Press the seams so that they lay flat.

Borders:

Measure the vertical center of the Block "O" this measurement should be close to 23" strips.

Take 2 of the 5" Strips and use the vericial center measurement to determine the correct length. Attach both of the borders. Pinning the right side of border to the Block "O" where necessary to ensure the fabrics match. Press seams to border fabric.

After the side borders are added, measure the horizontal center of the Block "O" this measurement should be close to 27.5" strips. Attach both of the borders. Pinning the right side of border to the Block "O" where necessary to ensure the fabrics match. Press seams to border fabric.

Quilting:

Layer the Block "O" the using the batting of your choice and a piece of muslin.

I like using squares because I can quilt using straight lines.

After you finish quilting trim the batting and muslin even with the Block "O".

Finishing:

Take a final measurement to determine the size of the pieces needed for the pillow back.

I measure the length of the pillow, divide that in half and add 4" so that the pillow is not exposed. If the backing material needs a finished edge, just fold under 1/4" twice and topstitch. Place the first piece of backing material right sides together with the Block "O" panel and sew the 3 sides. Lay the second piece of backing material right sides together with the Block "O" panel and overlapping the other piece of backing material and sew the 3 sides. If the backing material needs a finished edge, just fold under 1/4" twice and topstitch.

My Charm Bracelet Quilt

I have wanted to become a Moda Chef for the last year or so. Moda looks for designs using their precut fabrics suggest as charm packs (5" pieces), jellyrolls (2.5" strips) and layer cakes (10" pieces). So I have decided to submit this quilt design. My design is using Sandy Gervais' Giddy.

Nermal - Bug Stings and Blogging

We had a scare with Nermal on Friday afternoon. He was crying and didn't want to be touched, and his tail was hanging straight down. As my DH said 'Nermal isn't struting!'. Called the vet and took him in on Saturday morning. He was feeling better by the vet appointment. The vet checked him out and determined he had been stung on the back. He still has a bit of a lump. But he is feeling so much better he decided to help me blog today!

July 2011 has been a really Hot one! Thank goodness for air conditioning!

I have been busy finishing my Scarlet and Gray quilts for the trunk show in October at JEllen's House of Fabric in Mayfield, Ohio. By finishing I mean adding hanging sleeves and hand sewing on the bindings.

I finished this one last week. Now I'm working on this one.

I will take a better picture when it is completed.

I have 4 more that need done by the end of the month.

Then 2 more are coming from the quilter to be done by the 1st of October.

I better get busy!!

I just finished ready the 4 books in Marie Bostwick's quilting series, they were a wonderful blessing. It's great to read books about women in their 40's and 50's that have real problems and the quilting sister's that support them. When I'm not quilting I enjoy reading about quilting and how it can make a difference in people's lives. I have added a few books to my Quilting Novels list on the right hand side of my blog. If you can find the time this summer pickup a book from on of these talented authors. I think you will really enjoy yourself.

The Big Bad Rodent is Gone!!!

I realize that mice or voles are not big!! But when Nermal brought one into the house on Tuesday you would have thought the world was ending!! For starters I'm not really fond of small fast creatures and Jim was concerned about damage to his audio equiptment. And of course it was all my fault because Nermal is my cat and I insisted on the pet door!! It doesn't help when our cats only play with rodents!!

We put out traps on Tuesday afternoon and I was on trap patrol till 2:30 a.m. this morning when I heard a noise. It turned out that the rodent had found a trap and that Garfield found the rodent! I went down to the living room and found one of the traps laying upside down on the floor. Turned it over and there was the rodent stuck to the trap!! I quickly tossed it in the trash can. Nermal was wondering around but it took me a few minutes to find Garfield. I think he was the one to pull the trap out and he got stuck to the trap!! I have a feeling he was running around the living room trying to get unstuck! When he did get unstuck he ran to the basement and it took some calling to find him. He is ok now but I think the whole thing was a bit of a work out for him. Don't worry nothing on the trap was toxic.

I have entered my Fish Frenzy quilt in the Quilting Gallery's weekly quilt contest which is quilts for fathers. My dad used to spend a lot of time fishing in Ohio and Florida, so I thought this would make a great quilt for him. For the last year I have been testing patterns and Fish Frenzy by Purple Moose Designs was one I recently tested.

See how the Fish blocks go in different directions, just like they do on the fishing line.

I used fabric from my stash that was perfect for this quilt.

I have three quilts on display at the 2011 Madison Library Quilt Show on Middleridge Road.

I enjoy showing people my quilts with the hope to encourage them to start quilting. If you get a chance to stop at the library there are some beautiful quilts with great stories for you to see!

Pansies in the Moonlight is the first quilt I have completed from Eleanor Burn's Day and Night Book.

Gerber DayZ Chain is made using a great fabric line from Lakehouse Fabrics. It is based on a Triple Irish Chain pattern.

Run for the Roses is made of great horse panels that were cut apart and then sewn back together with shashing a nine patchs.

Quilt by Association

When I got back into quilting in 2006 I also found out that there are a number of authors writing Quilt Novels. I have always loved to read and these authors are combining my favorite topics: romance, mystery and now quilting. I just finished reading Quilt by Association by Arlene Sachitano it is the 4th in the Harriet Truman/Loose Threads Mystery.

It addition to great story telling she has a wonderful artist named April Martinez that does her covers.

I really enjoyed reading all four of these books and recommend them for some great summer time reading.

An evening with Patricia Knoechel

Pat is Eleanor Burn's sister and she travels sharing quilts and patterns from the Quilt In A Day company. This is the third time I have listened to her and each time I come away inspired to make a beautiful quilt.

Prior to Eleanor re-releasing her Radiant Star book, Pat suggested using a border print in the corner squares and side triangles. Doesn't that look cool!

This is a LoneStar Quilt that I completed a number of years ago. I need to get this one quilted.

I really like this pattern with the exta stars in the corners.

And this one is called Sassy Stars and uses the small stars!!

The other pattern I bought was this one it's called Stars and Crosses.

One of our neighbor girls is graduating from Geneva High this afternoon and will be attending Findlay in the fall. She will be studying Business and Culinary Arts. With plans to be a pastry chef. 2011 Spring Bloggers Quilt Festival

It has been a busy year for me here at I Quilt Scarlet and Gray. I started blogging last year and also started pattern testing for some great quilt designers. I have tested 23 patterns for 16 different designers. In addition I have been participating in a Marti and Me Club at Cottonpicker’s Quilt Shop, created by Marti Michell, so each month this winter I have been working on a different project. So it was a little difficult to pick out just one quilt to enter in the Bloggers’ Quilt Festival.

I have decided to share my Bali Breeze quilt which is the first project we did for the Marti and Me Club. I made the quilt using Batiks from my stash. The pattern gave us options for a tablerunner or quilts. I actually made three table runners into a quilt.

What I haven't decided is that if I choose to hang the quilt what direction I should use. Any suggestions?

Pattern Testing is a 'Cakewalk'

I recently tested this Cakewalk pattern for Barbara Chojnacki of Six Gables Designs. The majority of the fabric is Robert Kaufman Holiday Flourish 3 by Peggy Toole. It's beautiful holiday fabric with gold embossing to give it a very rich look!!

The pattern is made of 2 blocks that are rotated to get the desired look.

Garfield liked the quilt also. He was so pretty before we had to shave him!!

Celebrating my Blogs 1st Anniversary

I can't believe it has been a year since I started blogging. I have really enjoyed sharing my quilting projects with my followers and those of you on Facebook.

I have been keeping busy testing patterns and attending the From Marti and Me Club sessions at Cottonpickers Quilt Shop this winter.

This is my Seven Sisters project. The girls at the club suggested that I keep this a hexagon and use it as table quilt.

I'm currently working on a Scrappy Bear Paw wallhanging. Made from Holly Taylor's Dargonfly Summer by MODA.

Spring is actually thinking about making an appearance in Northeastern Ohio. Once the rain stops falling I will have a lot of grass to mow.

Since I started writing my blog I have met some wonderful quilters from around the country and even world!! Reading about their lives and their quilt projects is a very special part of my day.

When planning our trip to Orlando I realized that I would really miss piecing on my sewing machine. So I decided to take one of my quilts that needed binded with me. I have a number of quilts that are wating to be binded. I was able to get two and half sides done!! It's my first of many Day and Night quilts by Eleanor Burns, for some reason I don't have many pictures of this quilt??

I also talked my Dad into taking me to a Quilt Shop in Haines City.

I found a chalk refill I needed and then I found a Blank Quilting Fabrications Strips set of Black and White fabric. So now I need to find a pattern or design one that will use the strips and the other coordinating fabric I already have.

Our trip to Orlando Florida to see Harry Potter

We left frozen Northeastern Ohio to travel south to spend time with my Dad and Sister in Davenport, Florida.

Garfield wanted to join us!

We were in Florida to relax and soak up some sun.

We got to experience what it was like to be in an F5 Twister.

Dorthy II is one of the props used in the move, it helps to collect data for the study of Tornados.

It was great to spend time with Dawn, Jim, Dad and Betty.

It's National Quilting Day!

I visited the quilt shop that moved into Geneva, Ohio called A Quilting Affair. While there I found Sweet Liberty designed by Pat Sloan and distributed by P&B Textiles. It's a great patriotic fabric and I purchased a Fat quarter pack.

I'm a member of the From Marti and Me Club at Cottonpickers Quilt Shop in Chardon. Our current project is Seven Sisters.

Gayle had mentioned during our class that you could use Fat Quarters so I decided to use my Sweet Liberty ones. I picked out seven of the ones I thought would stand out the best against a cream background.

I have completed the first three blocks.

Magic Moon by Elisa's Backporch Design

I recently tested a new pattern called Magic Moon for Elisa's Backporch Design she used my favorite colors in her sample!!

I have used her templates to make a Dunkard's Path quilt.

This is my Cat's Paw Drunkard's Path Quilt. It's actually together and quilted, I need a new picture. It was made using Elisa's Moon In Window pattern.

If you read my 2011 UFO List you will see that I listed a Bargello Purse that needed completed.

It is almost done, all that needs done is to whip stitch the handles to the body!

This is a pattern from Figure Flattering Quiltwear, it is the same company I got my pattern for my Bargello Jacket.

January 2011 Completions

Inaddtion to the finishing of my first UFO of 2011 I have also completed some others projects.

Unfortunately I can't post pictures. They are patterns that I have been testing. I have to wait for the ok by the designers before posting pictures. In January, I completed 3 lap quilt tops. They all used fabric from my stash. One was scarlet and gray, one was made of fish fabric and the last one was made of brights. I also completed my first paper piecing project in the form of 2 BOM's (block of the months). The 2 BOM's may have to be made again, because I think they are too small. With paper piecing that you print the foundation off of a computer you have to be careful with the size.

I hope I have as productive of a February.

If you read my 2011 UFO List you will see that I listed my Gerber DayZ Chain quilt. It needed a hanging sleeve and binding. Well as of today it is finished! And tomorrow it will be taken to the Lake Farm Parks as an entry in their 2011 Quilt show.

As you can see I added the winning score from the 2011 Sugar Bowl in which my Buckeyes beat the Arkansas Razorbacks.

I have also added a few gadgets, including Popular Posts and My Blog List.

I finished up another quilt I was testing yesterday, and hope to make progress on another one this weekend.

I also have to get the binding done on my Gerber Day Z quilt by Thursday so it can get entered in the Lake Farm Parks Quilt Show.

As you can see I will be busy for the next few days.

Cleaning for guests can be worthwhile!

My sister Dawn is visting for a few days from Florida. One of things I have told my husband is that I will make sure that the quilting/spare bedroom is available for guests. So once I got done cleaning for the family Christmas gathering I started working on the spare room. The room was actually usable when my friend Claire came to visit this summer. I have a real problem with horizontal surfaces as you can tell by these pictures.

I have re-organized some of my notions into baskets and containers.

My husband did ask where everything went!! It has been relocated to my side of the basement. That is an area that needs a real makeover.

As soon as Dawn leaves for Florida the quilt will be folded and the bed stripped. Then my 12 UFO's will be found and placed in order my month. I need to get busy tomorrow and get some binding cut and some blocks pressed. I'm going through quilting withdrawal!!
