Sonoma Rose - An Elm Creek Quilts Novel

NOW AVAILABLE: Sonoma Rose
The 1920s evokes indelible cultural motifs—the Jazz Age, Modernism, Prohibition—and
inspired heralded literature—from the interwar disillusionment explored in The Great Gatsby
or The Sun Also Rises to the strong women portrayed in Alice Adams or Main Street.
But in recently published fiction, this time period has rarely been explored.

Jennifer Chiaverini, author of the bestselling Elm Creek Quilts series, is one of few writers
working today to demonstrate equal mastery of contemporary and historical fiction. In 2011,
she published two New York Times bestselling novels—The Union Quilters, a Civil-War-era
chronicle of life behind Northern lines, and The Wedding Quilt, a twenty-first-century
celebration of one of America’s most enduring and romantic traditions. In SONOMA ROSE
(Which went on sale: February 21, 2012), Chiaverini turns her imaginative powers to the story of how one woman’s courage and vision wrought true change, for her family and for herself.

Rosa Diaz Barclay is touched by the criminality surrounding Prohibition when she
unwittingly discovers that her husband, John, has given over the duties of their
Southern California rye farm in favor of armed bootlegging. Fearing the safety of her four
beloved children, Rosa flees, with little more than a suitcase filled with John’s ill-gotten gains
and her heirloom quilts. Accompanying Rosa is her true love, Lars Jorgensen, a good but
flawed man who is the father of two of her children.

Together, the six travel north to San Francisco, seeking not only refuge from danger, but a cure for two of the children, who suffer from a mysterious wasting disease. A beneficent doctor orders a special diet and a rural convalescence for which Rosa and Lars, under assumed names, hire on at a Sonoma County vineyard. There, the devotion of the Italian-American community to the craft of viticulture—which through no fault of their own, has become illegal—inspires Rosa to acquire a vineyard of her own, even as she discovers firsthand its inherent hardships and dangers winemakers face in such turbulent times.

As Rose, she creates a personal and professional identity that she would never have dared
imagine at the opening of her tale, one that brings great honor—and beauty—to all who
surround her. As the New York Journal of Books has written, “Jennifer Chiaverini’s strength is
not only writing strong female characters, but also placing them in interesting life and
times.” SONOMA ROSE is a triumph on both fronts.

Christmas Tablerunners and Vote

I have entered a tablerunner in the Quilting Gallery's Christmas table runners contest you still have a couple hours to vote for your favorite.

In June of 2010 I started volunteering as a pattern tester. It gives me an opportunity to perfect my skills and create items from patterns that I might not have purchased.

This is the first pattern I tested, it was a tablerunner called Every Day's A Holiday An Artful Table Runner. She sent me the fabric, Benartex Noel, pattern and a return envelope. I tested this pattern for Sarah Whitney at Quilt Patterns from Sweet Clover Canyon. I used e-mail to communicate with her and send her comments on the pattern. Upon completion I sent her the table runner and a picture. She used my name in the pattern as one of her testers.

The Devil's Puzzle by Clare O'Donohue

I have always loved to read and the chance to combine two of my favorite topics, quilting and murder mysteries, sold me on Clare's A Someday Quilts Mystery series.

In addition to being an avid quilter, Clare O’Donohue is a freelance television writer and producer, who has worked on a variety of programs including HGTV’s Simply Quilts with Alex Anderson. She is still trying to use up the fabric she was given while working there.

Witchcraft in a small New England town typically harkens Salem, Massachusetts. However, amateur sleuth Nell Fitzgerald finds the upcoming anniversary of Archers Rest, New York drawing out the town’s own dark history of witchcraft, as well as that of its residents in THE DEVIL’S PUZZLE. Nell is thrilled when her grandmother Eleanor’s boyfriend plans a double surprise—restoring the rose garden of her old Victorian house, and a marriage proposal. However, Oliver’s plans are put on hold when a skeleton is unearthed in Eleanor’s backyard. Police Chief Jesse Dewalt launches an investigation, and for once, Nell vows to stay out of his way, instead focusing on organizing a historic quilt show as part of the town’s upcoming anniversary festivities. When clues lead to questions about Eleanor’s past, Nell is forced to uncover the truth. As the anniversary approaches, a chilling wave of vandalism strikes town hot spots, raising fears that witchcraft has returned, and revealing secrets that could change life in Archer’s Rest forever.

The Someday Quilts series includes The Lover’s Knot, A Drunkard’s Path, The Double Cross and The Devil’s Puzzle (Oct. 2011), and her Kate Conway series recently made its debut with Missing Persons. O’Donohue lives in Chicago, IL. Visit her website at clareodonohue.com and the Someday Quilts fan page on Facebook.

THE WEDDING QUILT is a tribute to one of America’s most romantic and enduring traditions.

Effortlessly weaving together past, present, and future, THE WEDDING QUILT introduces Sarah’s long-awaited twins twenty-fives years into the future. Just as Chiaverini longed for a wedding quilt of her own, Sarah’s daughter also dreams of one with which to begin her marriage. Enlisting the help of her fellow Elm Creek Quilters, Sarah collects signatures of the wedding guests in order to surprise her daughter with a quilt to represent all of her loved ones as she begins her new life. Readers will delight in new insight of past Elm Creek Manor brides as Sarah reflects back on her life and the many joyous experiences she’s had with her friends and family at Elm Creek Manor.

A flying is geese is a unit that is twice as long as it is wide and is made up of 3 triangles.

This block is made up of 2 Flying Geese units, and was used in piecing the border.

Flying Geese are also used to create Variable Stars.

The center block of my quilt is made up of 3 different sizes of Flying Geese.

Check out Dawn's Blooming Nine Patch and VOTE!!!

I have entered a Blooming Nine Patch at Quilting Gallery's themed quilt contest.

I say my first Blooming Nine Patch at a local quilt show and decided to make one using directions I found on the internet.

Using my 1990's stash caused me to run out of fabric and I had to redo some of the blocks to complete the quilt.  Now I have to figure out what fabric to use for the binding.

My sister Dawn has placed her name on this quilt.

And I guess Garfield has also!!

Please vote for my Fish Frenzy quilt this weekend!!!

I have entered my Fish Frenzy quilt in the Quilting Gallery's weekly quilt contest which is quilts for fathers.  My dad used to spend a lot of time fishing in Ohio and Florida, so I thought this would make a great quilt for him.  For the last year I have been testing patterns and Fish Frenzy by Purple Moose Designs was one I recently tested.

See how the Fish blocks go in different directions, just like they do on the fishing line.

I used fabric from my stash that was perfect for this quilt.

I need your Votes for Turkey outside my Window

I have entered another quilt in the Weekly Themed Quilt Contest.  This time it is one of my husbands favorites.  This quilt started out as an apron panel, it was then cut up and pieced using the Attic Window pattern. My husband Jim thinks its neat how it appears you are looking out the window into the backyard. I pieced it in 1993 and finally quilted it in 2007.

At one point today I was actually in the lead so please help me out!!
